Autumn Term

Hello and welcome back to September in Class 1. We hope that you have had a great summer holiday and that you are ready for the year ahead. I know that we are!

This term, our essential question is What wonders lie within the enchanted woods? It is going to be a great project to learn about, with a trip very soon to a woods. So keep your eyes out for the information about this trip.

PE sessions will be on a Thursday (for just years 1 and 2) and Friday (for everyone in Class 1). We will be changing reading books every Thursday and setting homework on a Friday - including spellings, handwriting and Numbots.

English

As part of our English learning, we have been learning a poem about a very famous character. This is the text map. Here is the poem:

What am I?

I have orange eyes,

a black tongue

and purple prickles all over my back?

I walk through the deep dark woods.

Why is everyone running from me?

I wonder whether you can work out who the poem is about? ✏️

Science

As part of our science learning, we dissected plants to find some of their basic features - the roots, the leaves, the stem and the flower. It was great fun to get hands on with the plants. These diagrams show some great understanding of the structure of plants. 

Building on from our learning about plants and flowers, we looked at the features of trees! What better way than to explore the tree on our field. We named the roots, the trunk, the branches and the leaves. 

PSHE

We explored sad feedings in our PSHE work, and explored who we could ask for help. We had a great discussion about what it meant to be sad and how our body might respond. Then we role played some scenarios to show how we could make someone feel happier! 

Design and Technology

In our design and technology work, we have been conducting market research for sandwiches. We found out which types of sandwiches were popular fillings and the different types of bread. Then we designed our own healthy sandwich using different ingredients and bread types. We then had chance to make our own sandwiches. We are taking them to our Woodland Walk with us. They look very tasty. 

Wyville Wood

We went on our woodland walk today to look for Sneezy the Dragon. We found his den and even had a go at building some fairy dens of our own. It was great fun. We even ate our sandwiches that we had made in DT. Mrs Pacey finished off our visit to the wood by reading us the Stick Man story. Thank you for such a lovely trip Mrs Pacey. 

English

In our English work, we have created some word banks so that we can begin to write our own poems about woodland creatures. It was great to show that we can synergize - one of our leader habits! 

Religious Education

As part of our RE learning, we have looked at two special books from two different religions - the Holy Bible and the Nobel Qu’ran. We had copies of both text in our classroom. We could look at each one and compare them - what is the same and what is different? ✝️☪️

English

We have been working together to critique our writing in English. Using our word banks, we created some sentences to begin writing a poem. We then worked with another child to read and edit our work. It was great to share our work together. 

 

English

Here are a handful of our finished What am I? poems. These are fantastic and the children really enjoyed reading them for their partner to guess who they are. Well done key stage 1, some beautiful handwriting and ideas too.

Art

In our art sessions, we have been using natural materials to create art work inspired by Andy Goldsworthy. The children have been very inventive in the way they used the materials and the pictures were fantastic. 

Science

We have been exploring plants in our science sessions and in this session we had to show Mr. D exactly what we know. We names some of the parts of the plants and we worked with our partner to talk about what the parts of the plant do to keep the plant alive. 

Science

We planted some runner beans in our science sessions. We will be observing the changes that these plants makeover the next few weeks. We cannot wait.

Computing

As part of our computing learning, we have been sorting and organising objects. We started by sorting on pieces of paper before moving onto sorting on Purple Mash. We had to think about the criteria that we were using to sort. We then sorted the objects into the different groups. It was fun to do. ✔️

PE (Whole Class)

In our PE sessions, we have been learning about creating different shapes in gymnastics. We have some great gymnastics in our class - including children in reception. 

Computing

We have been following instructions in computing. Instructions for computers are called ‘algorithms’. These are very clear and details instructions that need to be followed exactly.  To make sure something happens. We gave ‘BeeBots’ instructions on iPads and also gave instructions to each other when building a Lego model. It was tricky at times,  it we have it a good go. 

Children in Need

We had lots of time doing some mindfulness during the day on Children in Need. We had a challenge to complete minutes across the whole day. We did some yoga, listened to a story and did some mindful colouring. We even followed Joe Wick’s Mindful movement video to help us get energised for the next session. All brilliant fun. We raised over £50.00 as a class for CiN. Thank you and well done! 

PE (Whole Class)

After looking at our shapes last week in PE, this week we have placed those shapes onto pieces of equipment. It was good to learn how to use the apparatus safely and with purpose. We even helped to put it all away at the end of the session. 

Art

We have created our fantastic final pieces of art inspired by Andy Goldsworthy. The artwork is beautiful and we worked with our partner to create them. We cannot wait to share them with you towards the end of term. Well done Class One! 

Geography

As part of our geography work, we have been using the compass on the iPads to help us to find North, East, South and West. We even gave some directions to people to help them to find something. 

As part of our geography learning, we have been learning about compass points. We have used the compass points to create a map. We then used the compass points to tell our partner where certain features are on the map - the playground is to the north, the sun is to the south, etc. it was fun to create our maps and to use compass points. ​​​​
